St. Louis society belle Lutie Cameron steps into a different world when she arrives in Salt Fork to begin her life as the wife of cattle baron Jim Brewton. But Lutie is sure love can make it all worthwhile. Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn star in and Elia Kazan directs The Sea of Grass, an America pastorale of love and consequences based on Conrad Richter's novel and set in a West divided by ranchers and homesteaders. The Brewtons are also divided when Lutie sides with the plight of the farmers. Known for playing couples right for each other, Tracy and Hepburn here potray marrieds perhaps very wrong for each other. The results, as always with these two as well as costars Robert Walk and Melvyn Douglas, are fascinating to watch.-- Container.
